TomTom have announced the launch of the new TomTom GO 920 satnav system at the end of November - just in time for the Christmas season!

The new system has enhanced navigation technology - the Enhanced Position Technology uses the motion of the vehicle, together with gravity to ensure that the current position is represented as accurately as possible.

Controlling the system is carried out using the touch-screen menu system which we all know and love. In addition to which it is also now possible to enter destinations using your voice. The TomTom GO 920 comes with voice-recognition capabilities. Also included is the “text to speech” functionality - the TomTom GO 920 will speak road names - ensuring a safer journey for both driver and passengers.

The TomTom GO 920 comes boxed with an RDS-TMC traffic information receiver to allow the system to receive real-time traffic information. This information is broadcast over the FM wavelength and was originally for use with car stereos. The information is freely available and therefore there is no fee or licence required.

GO 920 comes with mapping data for Western and Central Europe as well as North America (USA and Canada).

Buying a satnav (satellite navigation) system for a car in the UK can be a bewildering experience - there are so many different models on the market, with so many different options that the choice can be perplexing!

Thankfully, the choice is not that difficult - there is a clear market-leader in the UK - TomTom

With it’s roots in the Netherlands, TomTom has grown to become a world-leader in in-car satellite navigation systems and the ease of use with which their systems are credited is a testament to their success.

New to the market for 2007, and building on the success of their previous models, come the ONE TomTom XL Great Britain and ONE TomTom XL Europe

The two new models both come with a new 4.3-inch flat, bright, colour touchscreen - the shape of the screen is easier on the eye - thereby making journeys less tiring.

Both systems are ready to use straight out of the box and there is no need to own or use a personal computer (PC).

The menu system is simple to use and it is very difficult to make a mistake when using the system - making it ideal for those people who are not usually very good with gadgets and gizmo’s. The touch-screen makes entering a destination, picking a favourite location or choosing one of the thousands of points of interest quick and simple.

The TomTom ONE XL Great Britain comes with a speed camera database built-in - making for safer motoring in school zones and other congested areas.

Full 7 digit postcode search facilities come as standard making it quicker than ever to enter a location and start your journey. The route can be calculated in a number of different ways - quickest journey, shortest route etc.

Both systems are compatible with the TomTom PLUS services - these are a range of services which are available via subscription and provide such features as realtime traffic and weather information, additional mapping data, more voices and larger Points of Interest databases.

New for 2007 is the QuickGPSfix technology - by connecting to a PC using the TomTom PLUS/HOME service a user can download the latest satellite data for use with the new QuickGPSfix chip fitted to the XL range.

Historically there has been a timelag from the time a satnav system is switched on to when the “first fix” with the satellite’s is made. The reason for this was due to the fact that thet satellite’s only report their position every 30 seconds.

The QuickGPSfix uses advances in technology to predict the location of the satellite’s at any point in time - thereby making for a quicker fix of position.

The new TomTom ONE XL range represents excellent value for money, and with the price of technology coming down all the time, now is the ideal time to invest in a satnav system for the coming summer months.

Credit card fraud is growing online. Avoidance is better than cure, as the saying goes. Do you really know who you are buying from when you shop online?

Here are a number of steps you can take to avoid being a victim of credit card fraud -

1. Only buy from credible merchants online - use high-street names you recognise or other merchants who are recommended to you.

2. Only enter your credit card details over a secure connection - a secure connection will have a web address which starts with https://

3. No credible merchant will ever email you asking for you to confirm personal information or log-in to their site via a link in an email - invariably this is a scam and the email is sent by someone pretending to be the merchant or financial institution - if in doubt call the company by phone to check - use their published phone numbers - not numbers listed in the email(!)

4. Try to avoid paying with credit card were the card could be taking out of site for processing - such as a restaurant - it has been known for credit cards to be cloaned (copied) in this manner.

5. If you withdraw cash from a cash-point using a credit-card always check the slot on the machine to ensure it hasn’t been tampered with.

6. Destroy all credit card receipts, bills and statements as soon they are no longer needed - if information like this fell into the wrong hands it could prove costly.

7. Never divulge your PIN to anyone - if you feel that your PIN may have become known by someone else contact your card provider and ask them for a new PIN number.

Shrewd shopping!

Recently I have been toying with the idea of buying a satellite navigation (satnav) system for my new car.

I came across this site and I found it very useful. Although it is not connected to any retailers I decided to go for the TomTom 910. Hopefully it will arrive in a few days time!
